According to the terrified residents, it was the worst landslide in the area. For safety reasons, residents of houses located near the site were ordered to evacuate. Tzu Chi volunteers were mobilized to assess the situation, identify the list of the affected households and extend care to them. They also handed condolence money to the bereaved families and blessing packages to the affected households, wishing the deceased peace and the survivors, peace and safety. This inaugural free clinic initiated by a paediatrician from Lahad Datu Hospital, Dr. Yeoh Kheng Song, who is also a TIMA member, has benefitted 122 adults and 86 children. The village chief, Beny bin Iskrasam, who is conversant in both the Malay language and Bajau dialect, volunteered as an interpreter for those who did not speak Malay. He said, “I am very grateful to you for treating the villagers. I will do whatever I can.” Taking into consideration the villagers’ medical needs, Dr. Yeoh aspires to organize such free clinics on a monthly basis.
