The world of Tzu Chi Nov-Dec 2021 (Vol.138)

47 TZU CHI 138 * Extracted from the book “Infinite Teachings, Infinite Meanings”. Serene Reflection Question & Answer By Dharma Master Cheng Yen One disciple had returned to Taiwan after completing studies abroad and was going to start working for Tzu Chi’s Mission of Education. Master advised the disciple, “People with advanced degree might become too theoretical and idealistic. Without practical experience, they become attached to obscure ideas and harsh judgements. Lost in their theories, they tend to become more confused the deeper they delve. Life is fundamentally simple. Many of the societal phenomena that worry us are due to overly complicated thinking. Therefore, I wish for the education that Tzu Chi provides to be simple and practical. Bringing our thinking back to reality and focusing on education that purifies our character will bring blessings for our society.” A student said, “Many medical students choose their specialty to make money, which leads to competition.” Master said, “Medical students’ goal should be to save lives. If their goal is for profit, they fail to live up to the ideal of a medical doctor. By diligently working towards the goal of saving lives, we will be steadfast and at ease; conversely, by competing for profit, we will suffer more and more.” A student said, “If there is a conflict between my parents’ expectations and my ideals, should I obey my parents or follow my ideals? After forming a family and establishing a career, if I move away from my parents, how can I best fulfil my filial duties?” Master said, “You should first be understanding towards your parents. Calmly listen to their suggestions, earnestly communicate with them, and then sincerely express your opinions. Do not oppose them for the sake of opposing them. Many young people think that they can do whatever they like. You should not have this kind of attitude, Otherwise, you might behave blindly and end up hurting yourselves and others. Forming a family and establishing a career do not conflict with being filial to your parents. If the conditions are right, it is best to take them in under one roof. In this way, you are best fulfilling your duty as a child while serving as a good example for your own children.”
