This Lunar New Year, volunteers spread warmth and joy to the residents of Taman Sinar Harapan. N estled in a rural area, Taman Sinar Harapan in Kuala Kubu Bharu has been a refuge for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. For 30 years, Tzu Chi volunteers have visited the centre monthly to provide essential care, including haircuts, nail trimming, and bathing. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when on-site visits were not possible, volunteers remained in close contact with the centre. On February 9, 2025, 125 volunteers and kind-hearted individuals arrived for their regular service visit. This time, the centre was filled with the festive spirit of the Lunar New Year. Three volunteers dressed as the God of Prosperity went around distributing mandarin oranges and red packets, spreading joy and blessings. One bedridden resident beamed with excitement upon seeing the God of Prosperity approaching. As the latter held her hand and softly sang the song “Gong Xi Gong Xi”, her eyes crinkled into a bright smile. To everyone’s delight, she made a heartfelt effort to repeat the words, joining in the festive greeting. Another resident, who initially lowered her head shyly, peeled the mandarin orange she received and offered the fruit to the volunteer dressed as the God of Prosperity, instead of eating it herself. This loving gesture moved everyone present. The festivities continued with a lively lion dance, bringing even more joy to the residents. Volunteers also prepared mandarin oranges and little gift packs to express gratitude to the staff for their dedication. The centre director, Kamsiah, shared that both residents and staff eagerly look forward to the volunteers’ visits each month, and she hopes for more activities to engage the residents in the future. Even the smallest act of kindness can brighten someone’s life. When these moments of love come together, they create a brilliance that shines through the darkness.
