The world of Tzu Chi December 2023 (Vol.148)

TZU CHI 148 27 “Acknowledging and reciprocating kindness is a fundamental aspect of being human. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tzu Chi and four individuals. Firstly, Tzu Chi for the continuous support for my family, allowing me to focus on my studies without the need to drop out and work to support my family. Secondly, I am grateful to Ms. Lee for sponsoring my further education. I also want to thank Dr. Lee for giving my mother a job, and my mother for raising me as both a mother and a father. Last but not least, thanks to my secondary school counselling teacher, without whom I would not have crossed paths with Tzu Chi.” After receiving the award, Men Han said with a beaming face, “This is Tzu Chi’s recognition of my hard work and academic achievements. However, I would not be conceited. I will continue learning to further improve my knowledge and skills.” Carving their own path in the world Every child has their own unique journey in life. Sixteen-year-old Avinaash a/l Uventhiren struggles academically, but his optimistic spirit and love for sports shine through. Receiving the Excellent Performance Award, he said, “I love sports, and I have won several competitions, especially in bowling and athletics. My teachers’ constant encouragement motivates me to keep striving for improvements. Thank you, Tzu Chi, for this award. I hope to give back to society one day.” Lavenya a/p Loganathan, a recipient of the Service and Filial Piety Award, is a Form 3 student. Her father has been unemployed since his leg amputation six years ago, while her mother earns a meagre income as a kindergarten teacher. Tzu Chi provides financial assistance for her father’s medical expenses and her family’s daily needs. Lavenya not only helps her father apply medication and shares household chores, but also volunteers at the recycling centre. She said, “I like helping others. I want to be a Tzu Chi volunteer when I grow up.” Nur Aisyah Li binti Abdullah grew up in a single-parent household. The family relies on her mother’s income as a babysitter and cleaner. Tzu Chi volunteers have been providing care since 2010 when Tzu Chi stepped in to offer financial assistance. Now pursuing a foundation course at Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Nur Aisyah also works as a part-time livestreamer on social media to earn some pocket money. She also plans to apply for scholarships for her studies. Twice a recipient of the Perfect Attendance Award, she received a subsidy for higher education admission on this occasion. After watching the charity documentary, she said, “I am blessed in comparison. I should be grateful for everything I have. In the future, I want to volunteer to help those in need.” Kwon Zhi Yan, a Form 6 student, had to share a computer with her three siblings for their homework. Volunteer Teow Soo Pin noticed her need and applied for a laptop grant from Tzu Chi on her behalf. Receiving the laptop, Zhi Yan remarked with joy, “Now I don’t have to fight with my sisters over the computer anymore!” On that day, the children’s efforts were duly recognised. The love from society will also spur them on to overcome the hurdles in their journeys ahead and achieve their dreams.
