The world of Tzu Chi September 2023 (Vol.147)

07 TZU CHI 147 journey of personal growth and enrolled in a special education course. Breakfast became a parent-child time to foster warmth and connection. Living skills were imparted, and in the car journeys to the recycling centre and school, Ket Wey would share the wisdom of Jing Si aphorisms. He hoped that the wisdom and powerful words would eventually take root in Zheng Xuan’s heart. As he shared, these teachings of the Master also became his own source of support. In September 2022, Ket Wey discovered he had cardiovascular blockages, necessitating a coronary angioplasty. Drawing strength from the Master’s teachings, he faced it with calm resolve. He reflected, “Master always advises us to accumulate our blessings. I am not as blessed, as I have not done enough. While lying on the operating table, I had no fear. I was just reflecting if I had contributed much to society and to mankind.” This led him to reaffirm his commitment to the path of service. Ket Wey had heard from some that a special kid is here to collect karmic debts. Now, he is convinced that Zheng Xuan has, instead, come to lead him and Li Shya to walk the Bodhisattva Path. Transformation also occurred with Li Shya. Witnessing the improving rapport between father and son, Li Shya became even more convinced that through the Dharma, the Way can be found. She is no longer the anxious person she was, after listening to the Master’s teachings on karma and advice to give well- wishes rather than to worry. The couple’s commitment earned a recommendation for them to be certified as Tzu Chi commissioners in 2021, where in June 2023, they received the certification from the Master in Hualien, Taiwan. It is their hope that one day, Zheng Xuan will also become a disciple of the Master and walk the Bodhisattva Path alongside them. Siew Ket Wey (right) and his wife, Yap Li Shya (left), embarked on a new chapter of life thanks to their youngest son, Zheng Xuan (middle).
