The world of Tzu Chi September 2023 (Vol.147)

2023 • 09 28 “Come do recycling, be healthy, be worry-free!” June 11, 2023 marked the opening of the Tzu Chi recycling centre at the Selangor King George V (SKGV) Silver Jubilee Fund Care Centre. The establishment of this recycling centre within an elderly home was a pioneering effort, offering residents an opportunity to experience something different and meaningful while promoting environmental consciousness. Looi Seng Loong, whose company sponsored the materials and assisted in constructing the recycling centre’s roof, was deeply moved, observing how the elderly, whether using wheelchairs or canes, not only embraced environmental protection but also learned waste-sorting from volunteers. He remarked, “If these elderly are willing to do recycling, then the young ones like us should do it too, and do more.” Tzu Chi’s ‘Bento of Love’ initiative made a heartening impact at SJK(T) Jalan Khalidi, with all 144 students and teachers embracing meatless lunches for seven days. Senior Assistant Sumaty a/p Chandana Mohon shared that previously, some students would bring fried or sugary snacks from home, which also lacked nutritional value. Despite the school’s multiple attempts to promote healthy eating, the effects had been minimal. Throughout these seven days, everyone enjoyed a departure from their usual meals. Each day, teachers would share with students about the vegetables they were consuming and the associated nutritional benefits. This approach enabled students to absorb information more readily outside a classroom setting, while also enjoying healthy meals.
