The world of Tzu Chi September 2023 (Vol.147)

TZU CHI 147 09 India, he shared, “This is the place where Buddha attained Enlightenment and Buddhism was born. Buddhism is supposed to flourish here, and its inhabitants should live in ease and peace under the influence of the Dharma. Regrettably, the reality is far from such. The local Buddhist community comprises only a small number of monastics, while the residents endure much hardships. Conversely, Buddhists around many parts of the world have received the light of the Dharma. The Buddha’s teachings aim to liberate all sentient beings. Given our karmic affinity, we must give back and revive the Dharma in the birthplaces of Buddha and Buddhism.” In Bodh Gaya, Dr. Saw went beyond medical assistance to engaging in education, charity, and humanistic activities. He recounted with delight, “I visited schools and homes alongside volunteers. I found the volunteers truly amazing. They all didn’t know each other before this, but had come together in a shared mission to spread the Dharma and uplift lives. They worked cohesively in a foreign land, despite being unfamiliar with the local behaviours and cultures. Everyone played their part efficiently, connecting with the locals and empowering them within a very short time. It was truly admirable and touching.” Dr. Saw continued, “I believe this synergy stemmed from their past experiences and shared ideals. They were thus able to bring fruitful results in the local community so quickly. I must learn more from them.” Driven by humility and a spirit of learning and service, he found growth and enlightenment within his heart and soul. On June 18, 2023, Dr. Saw was certified as a Tzu Chi commissioner. He vowed to follow in theMaster’s footsteps and practise the Bodhisattva Path. His aspiration is to propagate Tzu Chi’s philosophy of Great Love to people across the globe, transcending backgrounds and borders. He remarked, “It is evident that an organisation with shared purpose will achieve greater and more long-lasting goals.” When the unfortunate cannot find help, those who are blessed must go to them.
