N g Siew Kwan has been in the food and beverage industry for over two decades. From a chef, he worked his way up to owning 15 milk tea chain stores. His business was thriving until the Covid-19 pandemic forced him to close his chain stores one after another. In April 2020, his life took an unexpected turn when he suffered a fall that left him wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life. Although he struggled to accept it initially, he found the strength to move forward with his family’s support. He even opened a new restaurant with his wife. In 2021, just when things seemed to be looking up, tragedy struck, yet again! His wife passed away suddenly due to a heart attack, leaving him to care for their young son. In this time of grief and loss, he remembered the teachings of Master Cheng Yen from a book study he had participated in with his sister, Siew Lin. He realised that he needed to let go of his attachment and grief, and embrace the present moment. This realization led him to become more active in Tzu Chi activities and he even opened a vegetarian restaurant with his sister. Through his resilience and determination, Siew Kwan has found peace and fulfilment in his life. He said, “I feel that my life is very meaningful. I am deeply grateful that God did not take away my life. I am fortunate to still have my hands and a clear mind. I vow to do something that contributes to society. If I can do it, everyone can do it too.”
