Serene Reflection Question & Answer By Dharma Master Cheng Yen The superintendent of a hospital was diagnosed with stomach cancer, which had already spread to his liver. He could not handle the reality of the situation and became depressed. Before his surgery, his wife asked Master to give him her blessings. Master said, “Our karma cannot be changed by someone’s blessings. We must have an optimistic mindset and not take life and death seriously. An unhindered mind will naturally help his condition. If he can be in a good mood, his body will get better, but if he has afflictions, his organs and cells will react accordingly. So, he should not worry too much; he is a doctor himself, he should know this principle. “The length of every person’s life is different, but we all go through the cycle of birth, aging, illness, and death. Therefore, family members must accept the circumstances and give their loved ones their sincere blessings. Facing life and death is not frightening; what is frightening is when we scare ourselves. The Buddha taught us that death is just leaving this life for the next one. So, we must not take life and death too seriously, but simply do what we can to fulfil our duty each day that we live. “The meaning of life does not lie in its length; each day of our life passes regardless of whether we are afflicted by worries or are peaceful and at ease. So, why not choose to be at ease? You must be strong and give him more encouragement.” A Dharma-sister had developed cancer. She had already received chemotherapy, but the tumour continued to grow. She wanted to give up the treatment. Master said to her, “Listen to your doctor’s advice and let him take care of your body. Doctors always try their best to find solutions. If this treatment does not work, they will find another one. When it comes to your heart, let the Buddha and Bodhisattvas take care of it. Open your heart to accept the course of nature. Train your mind to be happy every day.” 2022 • 10 44
