The world of Tzu Chi July-August 2022 (Vol.142)

TZU CHI 142 29 Takizawa Masahiko, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Malaysia Office, led his colleagues to visit KL Tzu-Chi Jing Si Hall to learn about Tzu Chi’s four major missions, especially its experience in promoting environmental protection over the past two decades. Upon seeing many electronic items at the recycling centre, including refrigerators, ovens and vacuum cleaners, he expressed his intention to further cooperate with Tzu Chi in the collection and recycling of electronic waste. As electronic waste contains substances hazardous to human health if not disposed of properly, Tzu Chi urges everyone to be mindful in this regard, so as to reduce harm both to humans and the environment. Teachers and refugee students from Tzu Chi HarmonyAlternative Learning Centre and Tzu Chi UnityAlternative Learning Centre stepped out of the classroom to have their first outdoor lesson post-pandemic. At Tzu Chi Recycling- cum-Education Centre in Selayang, volunteer Mok Check Boon shared with the visitors from Tzu Chi HarmonyAlternative Learning Centre that marine life is threatened by plastic waste, and promoted the concepts of 5R and 5S in recycling. The students listened attentively and had a quiz game before proceeding to have a practical session on recyclable classification. Teacher Kanageshwari said she was pleased to find that the children were starting to use lunch boxes instead of styrofoam containers for takeaways.
