The world of Tzu Chi May-June 2022 (Vol.141)

TZU CHI 141 41 ensuring that rain did not leak into the centre. His devotion to do a job well gave much relief to us,” he said. Eng Soon also related a scene from their flood relief efforts at Kampung Sri Aman in December 2021. At that time, Eng Soon was driving a four-wheel drive vehicle into a flooded area to deliver hot meals and other necessities to those affected. To ensure safety for the rest, Choong Lin volunteered to wade in the floods, to warn of any dangers and obstructions as the vehicle followed slowly from behind. Choking in tears, Eng Soon said, “Whenever I recall this scene, I would still see his back clearly. His fearless spirit and compassion for the flood victims are awe- inspiring. Three years passed by in a flash since his joining the Puchong community. Due to the pandemic, we had lesser time to contribute together. It pains me to lose such a responsible Brother in the Dharma, and I so much wish I could have more time to learn from him.” An example of compassion and dedication Ooi Cheng Hwei, a long-time collaborator of Choong Lin, was in sombre mood when he described how they had developed a close rapport together. Choong Lin was great at handling stress. No matter what the challenge may be, he would face it in the calmest and most composed manner—a dependable person to all. His easy-going and open-minded personality made it easy for him to build good relationships, earning him many good friends. Cheng Hwei added, “Brother Choong Lin always put others before himself. To him, there was nothing more important than accomplishing Tzu Chi missions well.” Cheng Hwei recalled a scene from the post-flood clean-up operation in Taman Sri Muda. Choong Lin was standing by a reeking garbage pile, directing the rubbish truck with sweat dripping down his back from the scorching sun. Yet, he stood firmly at his post. “This demonstrates Choong Lin’s unyielding spirit. He had always expressed his love for Tzu Chi through example. He is a worthy role model to all.” The grief from Choong Lin’s sudden departure cuts deeper, as they had built a strong friendship since earlier on. Cheng Hwei said, “Brother Choong Lin had completed his story for this lifetime. I wish for him to return in a healthy body, to once again return to Tzu Chi, and create blessings for this world.” Life is but fleeting, lasting no longer than a dew, a wind frost, or a lightning; it is in death and parting that we learn to value life and meeting. Although Choong Lin’s life ended at 57 years old, his exemplary kindness and devotion has left behind a shining legacy. He is truly a model Tzu Chi volunteer. Postscript: On January 15, 2022, Kim Tho and her children put aside their grief to volunteer at the cash relief distribution ceremony for flood victims. The children were touched by the companionship and care Tzu Chi volunteers have shown them since their father’s demise. Hence, they wanted to emulate their father’s selfless spirit, to contribute however they can. At SJK(C) Khe Beng, the three children helped to promote the goodness of meatless diet and volunteering in good causes, whereas their mother, Kim Tho, helped as a writer with the documenting team at the nearby Kamunting Hall.
