TZU CHI 141 39 Over the years, Yap Choong Lin would not miss out on setting up duties for the 3-in-1 celebration of Buddha Day, Mother’s Day and Tzu Chi Day. Youngest daughter, Julie, felt remorseful over not being able to repay her father for all he had done. “It was because I did not do well enough, did not work hard enough, and was not fast enough, that Dad had to work so hard all his life,” she said. It was sad to see her so guilt-ridden. But, in full resolution, she told everyone that since things had happened, she will not dwell in sorrow. Instead, she would compose herself and become a pillar for the family. “I believe everything happens for a reason. I wish for Dad to return quickly. I will uphold Dad’s spirit and live better in every coming day.” Fighting back tears, she promised, “I have no way of repaying Dad in this lifetime, but I will definitely be more filial to my mother.” Brothers bound in spirit Choong Lin joined the Tzu Chi family in 2009, marking many milestones with his wife alongside as he traversed numerous Tzu Chi missions, undertaking responsibilities with the documenting team, logistic team, being a community group leader and coordinator of major events. He was the ‘Yes, can do Man’ to many, for he answered to every call, and hardly rejected any offers of roles. Also, he would often be the earliest in major events, helping to set up and usually the last to leave, having to help with dismantling and clean up. He was always seen leading fellow volunteers, including Shea Sieng, in major events. The latter remembered Choong Lin as a humble and responsible person, who was always among the first to take the lead, and the one to see it through the end; never complaining or irritable.
