According to statistics by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in May, the number of people fleeing Ukraine has crossed 5.5 million. Feeling for the suffering of these war-torn people, Master ChengYen has been calling upon everyone to reach out to them. Even refugee students from Tzu-Chi Unity Alternative Learning Centre and Tzu-Chi Harmony Alternative Learning Centre responded to the call after watching a video about the war and understood the destruction caused by the war from Teacher Lim Choy Kim, a member of Tzu Chi Teachers’Association. Student Umarkarin said, “We are fortunate to have food to eat, whereas they do not. They lost their homes, and some even lost their family.” Another student, Aisyah, brought her bamboo coin bank and poured all the money in it into another bamboo coin bank prepared by her teacher, to send her love and well wishes to those in need. Even though life is hard for these refugee students, at least their life is safe in Malaysia and they even have a chance to attend school. On another side, Tzu Chi Klang volunteers decided to raise money for the Ukrainian refugees through the charity sale of vegetarian lunch boxes. Upon learning about this charitable cause, some vegetable vendors nearby donated vegetables to spread this love. In addition, volunteers also organized a charity sale of vegetarian food through pre- order at a recycling centre in Taman Gembira, where both adults and kids came to contribute their efforts. Tzu Chi will evaluate the next action for this humanitarian relief operation based on the development of the situation.
