21 TZU CHI 141 the pandemic to end soon so that seeing Master in person would be possible. Volunteer Leong Yit Yu felt a sudden pain in her left ear halfway through chanting, and sleepiness almost took over too. However, with a diligent mind, she managed to finish the chanting smoothly. When she listened to the words uttered by a Dharma Master at the Abode, the scene of Master Cheng Yen bearing all the pains in overcoming great difficulties to set up Tzu Chi Hospital came to her mind, and tears rolled down her cheeks. She was thankful for the conditions that had risen in her past life that has enabled her to become a follower of the Master in this lifetime. Language is no obstacle in sutra chanting Volunteer Vjayandram and wife, Phang Pow Choo, came home too. Although Vjayandram did not quite grasp the sutra verses, he firmly believes that doing one’s best brings constant blessings. He wished for good health for Master, and peace to the world. Pow Choo, on the other hand, could not see well, but the gentle sound of sutra chanting moved her deeply with a sense of joy. She looks forward to getting more people from the Indian community, as well as the elderly in her community, to partake in the sutra adaptation scheduled for July. She also vowed to make yearly trips to see the Master so long as conditions permit. Volunteer Ng Wai Cheng, who does not read Chinese characters, has been using videos with Romanized Chinese to chant the sutras. She did likewise for chanting the Medicine Buddha Sutra . Despite chanting without understanding the meaning of each verse, she said it brought her peace of mind, and to her, volunteering with Tzu Chi is walking the Bodhisattva path. As she was distracted and could not keep up with the chanting halfway through, she vowed to recite a sutra for Master when she returned home. She also vowed to benefit sentient beings just as how the Bodhisattvas in the sutras had made great vows, and promised to recruit at least five people to join the upcoming sutra adaptation. Echo Chien, CEO of Tzu Chi KL & Selangor who is currently in Taiwan, spoke to the volunteers through video conferencing. She thanked the volunteers for their dedication and shared the goals and perspective for 2022, which are to focus on charity, and to align all other Tzu Chi missions with this main focus; to continue efforts in promoting vegetarianism; and to work as a team and pass on experiences to strengthen the team so as to undertake Tzu Chi missions effectively. She also called for all volunteers to cherish the affinity of being with Master, continue to cultivate diligently and put in their greatest effort possible for the Tzu Chi missions to be realized fully in Malaysia. * Those who donate NTD1 million within a year will be appointed by Tzu Chi as an Honorary Board Member.
