2022 • 04 28 pecial Feature O n January 29, 2022, a group of 17 people, comprising Malacca volunteers, public members and relatives of care recipient Goh Lik Chye, arrived at his home for a spring cleaning. Goh is a colon cancer patient. His teenage children, Heng Heng and Siew Siew, are both beneficiaries of Tzu Chi Study & Awards Scheme. Before this, when his applications for social welfare assistance and social security claim were approved, Tzu Chi stopped financial support to him. However, towards the end of 2020, he suffered a recurrence of colon cancer and had to stop working as a hawker. His Vietnamese wife, Truong Thi Diem, who works outstation, was also affected by the pandemic. Thus, Tzu Chi resumed aid to the family. When CNY drew near, a decision was made to carry out a spring cleaning for the sickly father and his two children. Then, on CNY’s eve, the volunteers delivered poon choi and home-cooked dishes for the family’s reunion meal, as well as some new and second- hand outfits, which the family changed into for a family portrait. Truong was delighted to find her house filled with CNY atmosphere when she returned home. “Tzu Chi volunteers are so good at organizing things!” she told her daughter, who was overjoyed that the volunteers brought her a few dresses, which she loved, and a cute sling bag.
