The world of Tzu Chi Jan-Feb 2022 (Vol.139)

TZU CHI 139 37 Free Cataract Surgery: Restoring Hope and Light F or one year, Gunasegaran a/l Muniandy struggled with zero income. He lost his job during the movement control order, and it was a trying time not just for the former van driver but his wife and two children as well. When Tzu Chi initiated its Food Care project in July last year, his family was one of the many beneficiaries. It was during one of the telephone conversations that the volunteers learned of his cataract problem. Hence, an application for a surgerywas made on his behalf, and he became one of the beneficiaries of the “100 Charity Cataract Surgery” programme. According to 61-year-old Gunasegaran, his right eye was weak and blurry, which became an occupational hazard. He could not drive at night because of the glaring light from oncoming vehicles. In September last year, following the resumption of economic activities, Gunasegaran found a job as a van driver again. His boss was aware of his poor vision, and was considerate enough to arrange day shifts for him. He underwent a successful cataract surgery the following month at the VISTA eye centre at The Curve shopping mall. He could not be more thankful for the restoration of his vision. He planned to get his daughter to make a “thank-you” card to add to the string of gratitude notes and cards in the eye centre. “I am truly touched by the kindness of Tzu Chi. Considering my dire financial situation, I wondered when I would get a cataract operation, if it had not been for the generosity of Tzu Chi and the friendly VISTA team.” The timely surgery has relieved his burden and enabled him to live again. Grateful to God, Gunasegaran now breathes easier, sees better, and walks with lighter steps. Casting light where there is darkness Overjoyed and overflowing with gratitude, Gunasegaran could not help thanking the volunteers for the timely assistance to regain his vision. By Lai Sou Chang Translated by Goh Hwe Yong Photo by Ch’ng Kooi Tick As at January 2022, a total of 59 cataract surgeries have been completed for Tzu Chi care recipients, refugees and other patients from the lower-income groups. The free cataract surgeries have indeed brought light and hope to needy families. Life may cast shades and shadows but it can never diminish the faith and fortitude of humanity. Beauty and kindness still abound, perhaps in bountiful doses at such at time.
