The world of Tzu Chi Jan-Feb 2022 (Vol.139)

pecial Feature Tzu Chi volunteers sent aid to 43 affected areas at Raub, Mentakab and Temerloh in Pahang, another badly hit state. Sungai Perdak Village in Raub was obliterated by “timber tsunami”, causing the loss of homes for more than 30 households. As most of the villagers are elderly, only 30 per cent of the overall clean-up was done two weeks post disaster. Some villagers gave up cleaning and sought new homes elsewhere. On January 5 this year, a total of 140 volunteers from Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Pahang were mobilized to help ten affected households with the clean-up. The village was inundated in a foot-high mud with broken tiles strewn all over. Thu Yin Li, head of the village, said that fortunately, the villagers managed to escape the disaster on the night of December 18. Otherwise, things could have been worse. [Photo by Lai Jih Chuan]
