The world of Tzu Chi September-October 2021 (Vol.137)

New Homes for Indonesia Quake Survivors In September 2018, a massive earthquake rocked Sulawesi, Indonesia, claiming the lives of over 2,000 people and leaving more than 10,000 people injured. In the aftermath, Tzu Chi Indonesia and some local entrepreneurs worked together to build permanent homes for the survivors whose houses were destroyed in the quake. Since May 2020, Tzu Chi started handing over the homes in Great Love Village 1 and 2, located in Tadulako and Pombewe respectively, to the survivors. The inauguration was delayed until September 3, 2021, due to the pandemic. Hadi Tjahjanto, Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, who was among the guests in attendance, acknowledged Tzu Chi for putting the spirit of Great Love into action. He believed that with the Great Love villages, the survivors’ lives will improve. Sixty-one-year-old villager Louis (anonym) and his wife, who love gardening, have grown many plants at their front yard. They are thankful to be given a home in the Great Love Village and have gradually emerged from the grief of losing their daughter. [Photo by Clarissa Ruth]
