2021 • 08 16 78, Retiree 21-day challenge period: November 15 – December 6, 2020 Yong Lin Kim Ahealthy meal goes a long way RetireeYong Lin Kim, 78, spent the past seven years taking three types of prescription medication. When she stepped out of this dreadful routine by participating in the “Healthier Me” 21-Day Challenge, she began to see real changes. It was definitely more than a mini health retreat. Translated by Lee Hui Yieng F or many decades, meat has been a constant in her diet. At 78, Yong Lin Kim’s routine consists of popping three types of medicines to manage her blood pressure and cholesterol level. For the past seven years she had almost resigned to a lifetime of pills. Then came the challenge which rocked her diet. “My daughter-in-law suggested that we join the 21-day health challenge so that I could take a break from cooking. At the same time, I could enjoy healthymeals,” said LinKimduring the online closing of the 21-day challenge. Interestingly, what started out as a health retreat ended up as a redefined lifestyle for this gutsy lady. “I am ecstatic with the results. My blood pressure plunged from 154 mmHg to 106 mmHg, and I take less medication now. My cholesterol level (LDL) also took a dive from 2.43 mmol/L to 1.62 mmol/L.” The 21-day challenge had motivated Lin Kim to try staying on the diet. After a few months, her blood pressure fell to the normal range and the doctor stopped her blood pressure medication, advising her to keep track of the daily readings. Her medication for managing her cholesterol was also reduced to half a tablet to be taken every other day. As one of the leaders in the food quality- control team for the event, her daughter-in- law, Kwan Pooi Chen was proud of Lin Kim’s achievement and commented, “My mother-in- law cooks today’s dishes by boiling them with no added oil.” Lin Kim added, “Less salt and seasoning too.” Indeed, it only takes a good meal to keep the family glowing. As long as one member in the family learns the proper cooking tips for healthy eating, the entire family will benefit. Witnessing the health transformation in her mother-in-law, Pooi Chen feels that it is the children’s greatest blessing to be treated with healthy meals every day. eature
