The world of Tzu Chi March 2021 (Vol.132)

53 TZU CHI 132 * Extracted from the book “Infinite Teachings, Infinite Meanings”. When I was young, my teachers taught us not to get attached to the appearance of things, but what does that really mean? We must understand that “the Buddha is in our hearts”. It is not necessary for the Buddha to have an appearance. For example, if an image of the Buddha is carved into a rock, then the rock will become an object of worship. However, if it is not carved in his likeness, then it continues to be treated as an ordinary rock. The only difference between a rock and a Buddha statue is whether it has been carved or not. Since its intrinsic quality is the same, why should we be attached to its appearance? Faith is not dependent on whether you are young or old, nor is the Buddha-mind or a loving heart. All sentient beings have Buddha-nature. The most important thing is to show sincere reverence towards the intrinsic Buddha-nature that resides within our hearts, and to awaken this Buddha-nature in ourselves. What is wondrous Dharma? Words that people are willing to accept and follow are wondrous Dharma. If you only talk about the sutras or what the Buddha said in the past, and talk in a deep and abstruse way, then people will not understand. Even if they understand, they will not be able to put what you say into practice. However, if you can talk about how you yourself have changed, people will think, “I want to achieve that too!” Thus, if your words inspire people to transform themselves, then you are speaking the Dharma. What can help us not to worry? If you have a clear conscience in all things you do, then you will naturally be free from worries! Serene Reflection Question & Answer By Dharma Master Cheng Yen
