The world of Tzu Chi March 2021 (Vol.132)
2021 • 03 12 learning programme to teach students in taking their meals independently, tidying their beds, clothes, school bags, and doing simple house chores. It is truly joyous to hear feedback from parents that not only did the children learn to take responsibility for themselves, they also became their parents’ little helpers. Cheryl Lim, a full-time homemaker with three school-going kids, testified that her youngest son, five-year-old Mor Ming Yuan, became more independent than his two elder sisters, and took initiative to share his mother’s housework. It moved Cheryl to see her little boy helping to wipe the table, arrange the chairs, fold the clothes and keep his toys neatly. “He would arrange the sofa pillows when they are untidy. I am so surprised that such a little boy would do this!” she related. After the 2020 semester ended in December, Ming Yuan kept asking his mother when he could return to school because he likes to be with his teachers and learning together with his classmates. It was a big relief for many parents when the Government announced that kindergartens were allowed to conduct physical classes in the new year. All parents were contacted for their feedback and to understand their working arrangements. An online form was also created to gather parents’ opinions. It was a consensus decision to have physical and virtual teaching running in parallel. The foremost factor is taking into consideration the age of our young learners eature Before the start of lesson, the teacher explained classroom rules and regulations to the children, and taught them how to take proper precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
