2021 • 01 42 PromotingVegetarianism in School On December 7, 2020, at around 11 p.m., a fire razed through four terrace houses in Taman Bayu Damai, Pengerang. After learning about the fire incident, Heng Kwe Lang, a Tzu Chi volunteer who stays in Sungai Rengit, went to provide care at 3 a.m. Then in the morning, she went to find out more about the damages together with eight other volunteers. They returned that afternoon to present relief cash, eco- blankets and bamboo banks to the four affected families – three Malays and one Chinese. One of the victims, Ummi Amira, thanked Tzu Chi for the monetary aid. She said, “I’ll lead my kids to save in the bamboo bank and use the accumulated sum to help those who are in need and pass love around.” Kota Tinggi 2020.12.08–09 Reported by Toh Ya Lee & Tsze Hut Sea Photograph by Wong Kuan Fong Tzu Chi volunteers advocated vegetarianism at SJK(C) Tun Tan Cheng Lock in Subang Jaya by preparing about 40 vegetarian packed meals every Wednesday for sale to the teachers at RM5 each. The school principal supported the idea of adopting a plant-based diet, while the teachers commended that the dishes were delicious. Since the initiative started on August 12, 2020, the community kitchen had sold 746 meals. However, it had to stop operating when the CMCO was enforced in mid-October, with schools closed and classes moved online. The teachers are looking forward to having vegetarian meals from Tzu Chi again when schools reopen.
