2020 • 11 46 order to reduce the effects of immobility over a prolonged period of time. Volunteer Ng Ton Leong also took the opportunity to consult Dr. Saw on an issue faced by Selvi – two wheelchairs had been broken in the past four months. Dr. Saw requested Selvi to demonstrate how she usually moves from her bed to the wheelchair. The volunteers and doctors were stunned to see how Selvi’s children, Selvi and the elder sister exerted so much strength to move her body, from the bed to the wheelchair. Selvi had to endure so much pain throughout the process and that was the reason behind her reluctance to move from her bed. Worried that the incorrect handling would hurt her surgical wound and spine, Dr. Saw advised the volunteers to get a physiotherapist to teach them the proper way to ensure the safety and to reduce the burden of both Selvi and her caregivers. Besides Selvi, Dr. Saw also attended to her family members, examining her elder sister’s shoulder pain from incorrect exertion of strength when taking care of her; her father’s leg pain, and her mother’s chronic diseases. The whole family felt the love and care from the doctors and volunteers. Road to rehabilitation In order to grab the golden treatment period, the volunteers rapidly arranged for physiotherapist, Wong Eak Yong, to visit Selvi on June 30, for a thorough examination. From her response towards pain, touch and other stimuli, Eak Yong concluded that it was the right time to start rehabilitation, and she stood a high chance of recovery. With guidance and help from Eak Yong, Selvi managed to stand upright for the first time in nine months. Although she was in pain, she was ecstatic, Dr. Saw Bee Chian (in white top) is seen here teaching the kids how to massage their mother’s legs to improve blood circulation and stimulate her muscles. ouching Life Story
