The World Of Tzu Chi(Vol.128)
TZU CHI 128 23 Chew could still fully make use of his life to benefit others. Back then, volunteers had to travel to Malacca for volunteers’ training courses. Naturally, Kim Chew was the driver. It is like he has a deep affinity with the driver role, even until today. Starting a meaningful life Volunteering slowly moved Kim Chew to discontinue his illegal betting business. Coincidentally at the time, he learnt from his friend that a driver was needed for some kindergarteners. He immediately took up the job. Despite the drastic drop in income, he was firm in his decision. Gradually, business picked up and so did his income. “A fortune-teller once said that I can’t make money doing righteous jobs.” Due to the MCO in March this year, Kim Chew had no income for three months. He said shaking his head, “It was a tough time. I had to use my savings. Luckily, I’m single, so only I alone Epilogue: “I have many funny stories about my prosthetic leg, do you want to hear them?” Klang-based Tzu Chi volunteers had wanted to write about Kim Chew since about ten years ago, but they were always turned down. This time, when I learnt that he was willing to accept an interview, I was pleased yet anxious. Luckily, his openness and cheerful attitude melted my worries away. “One time, I was riding a motorbike with a friend and a dog chased after us. It kept barking and would not relent. My friend then suggested, ‘Let it bite your leg!’ End up, the dog really bit it, but it was too hard so it went away. Hahaha!” The prosthetic leg will not feel pain, but a wounded heart needs to be healed. He has chosen to laugh and accept the reality. When asked why he was willing to share his story, he replied, “I will not have a chance to share it when I’m no longer around!” His cheerfulness and contentment are a reflection of his spiritual richness. His physical flaw no longer mattered. suffer. If parents suffer, the whole family also has to suffer. Moreover, having been a vegetarian for so many years, I don’t spend much.” Actually, KimChew had tried to negotiate the transport fee with the parents. But, some parents said they were jobless too, while some even informed outright that they would not pay. Fortunately, some were still willing to pay. So, Kim Chew managed to get by with his frugal lifestyle. He could have returned to his previous job, but having witnessed his friends gambled their wealth away, he said, “Gambling causes harm to countless people. I can’t continue.” Leaving behind his extravagant life, 61-year-old KimChew has returned to a simple one. His clothes are from the recycling centre and his meal is often a bowl of plain vermicelli seasoned with soy sauce and pepper. Listening to him describing his simple meal now, it is hard to imagine that he used to relish in game meat. His transformation is truly amazing! From Disabled to Able
