2020 • 11 12 eature Entering the silent world – Coffee Sprex, a deaf operated café In the movie “A Quiet Place”, any sound produced by humans will attract monsters who will hunt and attack them. Now, if we are not allowed to make any sound in real life, what would it feel like? Translated by Peggy Lee S tepping into Coffee Sprex, a café operated by the deaf, in Kelana Jaya, the environment was not as tranquil as imagined. The chatters from patrons liven up the restaurant. The Café is no different from other cafés, saved for the person-in-charge, Bridget Chang, who communicates with her colleagues with hand gestures. Tables and chairs were arranged neatly. The wall was adorned with origami stars arranged into the phrase “Deaf Inspires” which was particularly eye-catching. “All my colleagues here are deaf, except me,” said Bridget. The stories behind the Café plus the aroma of coffee, added to the leisurely atmosphere. We are unique! Bridget was an Information Technology trainer before setting up Coffee Sprex in 2013, along with friends and two partners
