The world of Tzu Chi September 2020 (Vol.126)

2020 • 09 38 D ue to the pandemic, refugees are required to be tested for Covid-19 before they are allowed to return to work. Yet, they are not eligible for the free tests and they cannot afford a test at a clinic. Thus, UNHCR contacted Tzu Chi for assistance. This eventually led to a collaboration between Tzu Chi, UNHCR and Hospital Pengajar UPM (HPUPM), which was happy to provide a testing site and donate nasopharyngeal swabs for the testing, thereby enabling the refugees to return to work soonest possible. Commencing July 20, 2020, medical personnel of Tzu-Chi Free Clinic (Kuala Lumpur) set up a testing site at the HPUPM and successfully completed the first Covid-19 test session for the refugees. Subsequent testing was also held every Wednesday, with refugees arriving at the venue with transportation arranged by Tzu Chi. While the refugees were waiting for their turns, Tzu Chi volunteers helped maintain order, ensuring that they observed the social distancing rules. Zam Muam Mung from Myanmar said they were happy to adhere to the arrangements of UNHCR and Tzu Chi as these procedures ensured their safety and others as well, thus efficiently preventing the spread of the virus. Associate Professor Dr. Hj. Muhammad bin Mohd Isa, Director of HPUPM said, “Every human being needs to be treated equally. We should give service and any assistance that is required to everyone regardless of their religious belief.” Meanwhile, Yeo Jason, UNHCR Senior Public Health Associate, said that because the refugees had not worked for three months, it was a challenge for them to afford the Covid-19 test fees. Therefore, he was very grateful towards the timely help provided by HPUPM and Tzu Chi in solving the immediate problems of the refugees.
