TZU CHI 126 29 learning can be done through role modelling, like children imitating their parents’ behaviour. At recycling centres, even introverts who do not like to socialize, will start interacting with others, and not fall easily into loneliness, when they feel the love and care of the volunteers.” Dr. Wong also encouraged the elderlies to learn sign language as it stimulates their brains and strengthen their focus, thereby reducing the probability of them contracting Alzheimer’s disease. Activity can reduce sickness Our body is like a car. If cars remained unused for too long, they will exhibit problems. Dr. Wong pointed out that many elderly volunteers fell sick during the MCO period because they lacked physical activity. “When a person is physically inactive for too long, both their physical andmental conditions will degenerate.” Dr. Wong encourages the elderly to participate actively at recycling centres because being active would definitely be beneficial to them. What should volunteers older than 65 years old focus on? Dr. Wong believes that age should not be a measure of mobility. Using his father as an example, he pointed out that at 80 years of age, his father is still diligently involved in farming. He can still drive trucks, carry bags of fertilizers and move around without restrictions. “If the elderly person has limited mobility, it’s not an issue as they can reduce their movements at the recycling centres.” Dr. Wong suggested that everyone should start planning for their old age from young, including learning how to cook and prepare healthy food, learning financial planning and wealth management. If they had not already prepared, they can always start learning at any time. Dr. Wong, after performing angioplasty for two 80-year-old elderlies, recommended them to exercise regularly in order to avoid muscle loss. After three months, when they came back for follow ups, they told him that, “Doctor, luckily you encouraged me to exercise, I feel more energetic now!” Dr. Wong smiled and said that, when he sees his patients gain confidence, he is happy for them too. Mental health is a major factor in being healthy. “As such, starting any time is never too late. Don’t be restricted by your age and don’t let your age restrict you.”
