The world of Tzu Chi September 2020 (Vol.126)
TZU CHI 126 15 From Malacca to Kuala Lumpur, and from homes to the community In 1995, Tang Shook Lin and a few other Tzu Chi volunteers from Kuala Lumpur visited Tzu Chi Malacca to assist in the distribution of monthly Tzu Chi aid to needy households. While there, she read about recycling from a bulletin board and was inspired to promote recycling. On June 29, 1997, Tzu Chi KL, Petaling Jaya City Council and the Hawkers and Petty Traders Association, teamed up for the first time, to organize a community clean-up activity in SS2. About 300 Tzu Chi volunteers participated in the event. This was soon followed by the establishment of the first Tzu Chi recycling point in the Klang Valley, which was conveniently located next to the SS2 morning market, to promote recycling and collect recyclables on a monthly basis. Following that, more recycling points were set up in other communities. [Photograph courtesy of Tzu Chi Malacca] Tzu Chi’s Three Decades of Recycling
