2020 • 09 14 eature FromTaiwan to Malacca – birth of the first recycling centre In 1995, Echo Chien (now CEO of Tzu Chi KL & Selangor) took to promoting recycling after having read many touching stories of volunteers that did recycling in Tzu Chi Taiwan’s monthly magazine. She then encouraged her employees at the Shangqiao Garment Factory in Malacca to keep and bring their recyclables to the factory. By September, 1995, the garment factory had to build a storage facility at the back of the factory to resolve the issue of keeping large amount of recyclables. This became Malacca’s first recycling centre.
