In 2014, Tzu Chi volunteers in Istanbul started extending assistance to the refugees by distributing essential supplies, establishing a free clinic and the El Menahil International School. Professor Cuma Serya is a refugee, yet plays an essential role in extending relief to thousands of refugee families and providing an education to over 3,000 refugee children at the El Menahil International School. He became the first Syrian national to be certified as a Tzu Chi commissioner in Taiwan in late October 2019. Professor Cuma identifies with Tzu Chi’s principles, values and beliefs, which align with his outlook on life. He remains faithful to his religion and believes that being a part of Tzu Chi makes him a better Muslim.
