Although Samantha’s skin condition has yet to be fully cured, she seemed to have discovered the possible reason for her rashes. “I rarely experience flare-ups now; perhaps once every two to three months. My skin itches when I consume eggs and mushrooms every day for a week. If I control my food intake, my skin condition would improve, so now I realize that my diet affects the condition of my skin as well,” she noted. Her skin is also sensitive to conventional laundry detergent, as she revealed in her banter: “I’d leave my clothes in Daddy’s laundry basket to let him wash them for me!” Since 2014, ChengWee has been washing his clothes by hand, a task familiar to Tzu Chi volunteers. Dharma masters at the Jing Si Abode scrub and clean bedding and clothes with their own hands not only to conserve water and energy, but also cleanse impurities from their minds through repetitive labour. Hence, volunteers boarding at the Jing Si Hall Volunteer Ng Cheng Wee has procured handmade soaps from various corners of the world, yet remains a loyal user of Jing-Si soap.
