08 eature Culture Publications was conceived to further its predecessor’s goal of publishing reading and audio-visual materials to hone spiritual cultivation and foster a harmonious society. In the 90s, Malaysian volunteer Richard Koay began importing Jing-Si publications into local bookstores. However, readership was limited as the books were generally placed in the religion category and largely neglected. Richard mulled over the idea of opening a bookstore dedicated to Tzu Chi’s publications as an avenue for the public to know more about the organization and its values. After obtaining Master Cheng Yen’s approval, the world’s first Jing-Si Books & Café outlet began operating from a century-old building in a commercial hub in Penang onAugust 11, 2000. Taiwan’s first Jing-Si Books & Café outlet was founded in Tzu Chi University in Hualien the following year. The essence of Jing-Si publications derives from the wisdom of the Dharma masters at the Abode, who have laboured and endured hardship. The lessons acquired from a life of self-sustenance have formed the foundation for the publications, which provide nourishment for the spirit, covering various topics from Buddhist teachings and spiritual knowledge to education, healthcare, management and social awareness. Jing-Si Books & Café started serving beverages to elevate the customer experience and complement the books on offer, enabling patrons to enjoy their reading time with a cup of freshly-brewed coffee or tea. Quality reads from other publishers are also available for perusal in the Café. Publications aside, the Jing-Si range of products encompasses food, beverages and household goods that promote a healthy and environmentally- friendly lifestyle, including handcrafted candles, instant beverage mixes and reusable cutlery. In March 5, 2009, Jing-Si Culture Publications was officially registered as Jing-Si Publishing Co., Ltd. There are currently 30 Jing-Si Books & Café outlets nationwide operating on a non-profit model, with every product on the shelves an embodiment of spiritual sophistication.
