2020 • 05 44 By Tan Kim Hion Translated by Lee Hui Yieng Photographs by Lim Chin Shein ouching Life Story Nothing uplifts Thanaletchumi a/p Soosai more than working away at her cherished sewing machine, stitching together colourful swathes of fabric to craft unique pieces of clothing. Despite suffering from chronic illness, she has been able to navigate life with a positive mindset, thanks to her newfound “family”. Patching Together a Brighter Future T hanaletchumi a/p Soosai, 48, moved her sewing machine from its corner in the living hall and placed it next to the double-decker bed. She settled herself on the edge of the bed, positioned a piece of fabric beneath the needle and stepped on the pedal to activate the electric motor. The sewing machine came to life in an instant, the needle working at a furious speed to the rhythm of Thanaletchumi’s deft pedalling. Not long after, a sarong garment had taken shape. “I’ll earn RM5 by tailoring two pieces of sarongs for a friend,” shared Thanaletchumi with a grin as she held up her handiwork for volunteers Chong Mui Ling and Lee Soo Fen to admire. Mui Ling noticed that Thanaletchumi seemed most comfortable when seated at her sewing machine as she immersed herself in the joys of needlework.
