There is scarcely space in the ward to store the recyclables, so he only collects compact items such as plastic buckets, scraps of cardboard and paper and deposits them in a corner of the corridor leading to the common bathroom. “I’d promptly hand over the recyclables to the Tzu Chi volunteers during their monthly visits. We used to save recyclables enough to fill a large lorry, but now, the load barely reaches the halfway mark…” Siew Ching, who has been staying in the settlement since 1960, confided in a low voice.
