The world of Tzu Chi May 2020 (Vol.122)
01 TZU CHI 122 By Dharma Master Cheng Yen Translated by Goh Hwe Yong aster’s Teaching Be vigilant during these uncertain times, but never fear. An antidote has yet to be invented to counter this disease, but seek solace in an alternative remedy – keeping ourselves safe by practising self-discipline and praying sincerely for the well-being of all. T he Covid-19 pandemic has now spread to more than 160 countries and regions worldwide, with more than 180,000 confirmed cases. An antidote has yet to be found. It is also difficult to predict how long the pandemic will continue. Hence, it is only natural for us to feel anxious and fearful. When faced with the intensifying pandemic, feeling anxious or depressed is of no help. Rather, let us calm our restless hearts and minds and seek clarity. Notice how the sediment gradually sinks to and settles at the bottom of a glass of contaminated water when the water is left stagnant. At a time when everyone is apprehensively guarding themselves against potential danger, try to look at the current situation from a different perspective instead of dwelling on misery and dread. Cultivate higher levels of compassion and wisdom, reflect on our past shortcomings and seek a new direction for the future while hoping for the pandemic to end soon. Although an effective drug or vaccine for the viral disease has not been discovered, a spiritual antidote is within our reach – sincerely praying for mankind with the belief that the collective power of prayer is all-encompassing. We should also be mindful of our inner selves and strive to nurture kind thoughts and deeds as our spiritual anchor. Life is meant to be simple, but we have become blinded by greed and the insatiable desire for materialistic pleasures, at the expense of the environment. The consumption of meat and exotic delicacies has led to the cruel treatment of animals, yet many of us remain oblivious to the negative karma accumulated through our consumption habits, which involves the slaughter of livestock and poultry. Collective karma burgeons over time, driving Mother Nature to avenge us for our ignorance. Social norms are evolving fast. Greed takes root and flourishes silently in our hearts, while traditions and time-honoured values are diminishing in significance. Picture a balancing scale with positive and negative forces on either side respectively. If the positive force is being continuously displaced, the scale will eventually tip in favour of the negative Be Vigilant and Pray for the Well-being of All
