TZU CHI 121 37 Global News On March 7, 2020, the Xinjia Hotel in Licheng District, Quanzhou City, which was designated as a Covid-19 quarantine centre, suddenly collapsed at 7.30 p.m., trapping more than 70 people, including 58 patients under quarantinewho had tested negative for Covid-19. Fortunately, all casualties have been rescued. The following morning, Tzu Chi volunteers from Fujian Province headed to the site of the incident to provide hot meals and beverages to rescue personnel. After consulting the authorities on the rescuers’ needs, the volunteers delivered 32 multipurpose foldable beds and 400 thermal blankets – all of which had been disinfected – to the rescue units involved. China 2020.03.07 Relief Supplies for Rescue Personnel Sixty volunteers and members of the Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth Association (Tzu Ching) participated in the annual Clean Up Australia Day on March 1, 2020. After the clean-up session, the participants were treated to a picnic spread, organized by the Tzu Ching members to promote the concepts of vegetarianism as a healthy diet and a plastic-free, environmentally- friendly lifestyle to new volunteers. The volunteers prepared individual servings of rice balls for the picnic in order to prevent possible contamination through the sharing of food. The clean-up activity and picnic lunch served as a reminder of the importance of a vegetarian diet and reducing the use of plastic in ensuring environmental sustainability.
