The world of Tzu Chi April 2020 (Vol.121)

eature Finding my way home The MCO diaries Two volunteers share their MCO-inspired discoveries. F ollowing the official announcement of the impending MCO, I started taking stock of the food supplies in my hostel room, while contemplating a “to-do list” for the coming weeks. Among the items on the list was to set aside time for some introspective soul-searching. Hence, I decided to diligently follow Master Cheng Yen’s lectures on Da Ai TV every day, besides resuming the practice of offering prayers and the long- neglected habit of filling my bamboo bank – all of which I used to take for granted as merely a perfunctory part of my daily routine. On the first day I tuned in to the Master’s lectures, I kept on diverting my attention to other menial tasks, organizing my study one minute and reaching for a glass of water the next. I was able to retain my concentration for longer spans the following day, but still found myself giving in to distractions. By the third day, I committed myself to sitting still before the screen and focusing my attention on the lecture besides taking notes. As the days passed, I gradually progressed towards a calmer, more attentive state of mind. I felt more attuned to my thoughts and senses in the process of adapting to a slower pace of life. Furthermore, I participated in the study group sessions conducted through WhatsApp and attended the live telecast of Master Cheng Yen’s lectures at dawn every Saturday. From March 21 onwards, I began exchanging views with a fellow volunteer, who has been listening to the Master’s lectures at dawn daily, to gain a better perspective on the Master’s teachings. I recalled the Master’s words from the telecast session with fellow Malaysian volunteers on March 24: “By opening up your heart and connecting with the teachings of the Dharma, you’re one step closer to spiritual enlightenment.” I am now able to better appreciate the Master’s teachings after opening up my heart and getting in touch with my inner calling. I have yet to attain enlightenment, but I am on my way back to my spiritual home. Written & photograph by Yong Siew Lee Translated by Choo Suet Fun 2020 • 04 18
