The world of Tzu Chi April 2020 (Vol.121)
A s of March 31, Tzu Chi KL & Selangor has prepared 1,340 packs of vegetarian meals for medical personnel working on the frontlines. Sandalo Healthy Vegetarian Cuisine, based in Petaling Jaya, is one of the eateries contributing to this initiative. The restaurant is facing a hiatus in its dine-in operations in observance of the MCO and is limited to takeaway services, prompting co- owner Ong Kam Kiong, who is also a Tzu Chi volunteer, to consider utilizing the restaurant’s spare capacity to serve those working in the essential sectors by providing free vegetarian lunch packs. Every day since March 23, Kam Kiong and his staff have been preparing 60 vegetarian lunch packs for the medical staff at the Sungai Buloh Hospital. The director of the hospital was impressed by the quality of the meals and requested for more, bringing the total quantity of provisions to 100 packs daily. Kam Kiong took great care in planning the daily lunch menu and sought assistance from his friends, who were more than willing to chip in to help with the free lunches. “The lunchboxes we delivered to the medics don’t only contain food. They are packed full with love. We intend for the recipients to open the lunchboxes to find a pleasant surprise inside, as if opening a present. We hope to bring them a few moments of happiness that would motivate them throughout the day,” shared Kam Kiong. “The packed meals represent our support for their work by supplying them with the nutrition and energy needed to power through.” Delivering meals to frontliners Watch the video at: [Photograph by Wee Suan Yean] TZU CHI 121 11
