The volunteers’ earnest efforts gave Kent a boost of motivation to maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen himself. He spent the next few days cleaning the kitchen utensils and reorganized the entire space, transforming the kitchen into a neat and tidy corner that evoked praise from the volunteers. “I had no clue how to manage the household; I couldn’t handle the chores by myself either. Cleaning the house has become easier now. You’ve done your best to help me, so I should do my part too!” Kent offered brightly. He was no longer alone in his caregiving duties with the volunteers’ company. The volunteers held an intimate gathering to celebrate Heah Tin’s birthday as well as the upcoming Mid-autumn Festival, as both occasions were close to each other. Heah Tin sighed at the sight of the symbolic red eggs, ang ku kueh and mooncakes laid out on the table, reminding her that she had not celebrated her birthday in a long time. Kent stayed by Heah Tin’s side throughout the celebration, singing along to the birthday song, blessing her with well wishes and feeding her cake. The volunteers showered her with blessings too, wishing her health and happiness. Meanwhile, Heah Tin saved her best wishes for her son, hoping for him to be granted abundant wealth enough to last him for the rest of his life. “Your presence brings joy to my mother and lifts the burden off my shoulders,” Kent remarked to the volunteers with a rare smile on his face. The loving son never stopped caring for his ageing mother until her last breath; Heah Tin passed away peacefully late last year, leaving behind fond memories of her life and legacy as a respected hairdresser and a devoted mother. Heah Tin’s children are now based in the UK; only Kent stayed home to care for his mother.
