The world of Tzu Chi February 2020 (Vol.119)

04 eature By Lim Li Tian Translated by Choo Suet Fun, Lee Hui Yieng & Ong Mooi Lin Photographs by Sam Pin Fook The Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement, or more fondly known as theValley of Hope, stands strong even after 90 years in operation, bearing silent witness to uplifting stories of lives transformed by compassion, as well as disquieting accounts of the discrimination and marginalization of leprosy patients that reveal the dark side of humanity. Tzu Chi volunteers first reached out to the settlement’s residents 26 years ago, bringing smiles to their faces by offering unconditional care and comfort. The exchange of love and compassion bridged the distance between the volunteers and the residents, building enriching relationships that stand the test of time. Love Lives On in the Valley of Hope
