The world of Tzu Chi January 2020 (Vol.118)

2020 • 01 36 On November 28, 2019, violent gusts of wind lashed across Kampung Forest, a village in Sandakan, Sabah, ripping zinc panels off the roofs of 33 houses, uprooting pillars and causing structural damage to houses. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The village is a squatter settlement of wooden houses on stilts elevated above the sea, mostly inhabited by villagers of Bumiputra descent. Rudin bin Suri, an officer from the Department of Social Welfare, contacted Tzu Chi Kota Kinabalu, hoping to secure assistance for the wind-beaten village and the affected villagers. Local volunteers assessed the post-disaster situation and supplied each household with the number of zinc panels corresponding to the extent of damage to their roofs. “You made my day. I don’t know any of you, but you’ve helped me so willingly. I’m truly grateful,” remarked villager Maidi bin Hamja after receiving his share of zinc panels.
