The world of Tzu Chi January 2020 (Vol.118)

2020 • 01 34 ocal News Translated by Translating Team The newly-opened Kota Kemuning Recycling Education Centre occupies an area of 26,000 sq ft, with 90 percent of its structure constructed from recycled materials. It is strategically planned to not only showcase informative displays on environmental conservation, but also to accommodate an innovative “drive- thru” recycling facility with a designated lane that allows members of the public to unload their recyclables from their vehicles and deposit them in the allocated bins labelled for ease of classification. Volunteers are stationed at the Centre to share recycling guidelines with visitors and guide them in sorting recyclables in an effort to raise awareness on the importance of environmental conservation. At the opening ceremony of the Centre, Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) councillor Kamarudzaman bin Sanusi stressed that environmental awareness should be inculcated among all to preserve the environment for future generations. KL & Selangor 2019.11.17 Reported by Lok Lee Seng & Sia Ah Tong Photograph by Gan Wee Meng Since SMKBahang in Kota Kinabalu initiated the “My Magic Coins” charity movement in March 2018, student representatives have been collecting donations from their peers to assist fellow students in need. This fundraising campaign was the brainchild of SMK Bahang senior assistant Florence Chin, who was inspired to launch the movement after being introduced to the origins of Tzu Chi’s Bamboo Bank Era by a volunteer. She had intended to encourage her students to emulate the spirit of charity through the accumulation of small acts of kindness symbolized by the bamboo bank. The school has a student population of nearly 2,000, 10 percent of whom are from impoverished households. Donation drives have been held to raise funds for students in hardship to foster mutual support among the students.
