For the past 30 years, Tzu Chi volunteers have been striving to advance the organization’s missions across the Americas, including less-developed countries in Central and South America. The volunteers, serving diligently in their signature navy-and-white uniforms, have earned themselves international recognition and the moniker “blue angels” for their tireless efforts in charity work, conducting free clinics and disaster relief on a global scale. USA 2019.09.21 Celebrating 30 Years of Compassionate Service Tzu Chi volunteers were invited to participate in an event held at Nanfang’ao, Yilan County to comfort the Indonesian and Filipino migrant workers impacted by the Nanfang’ao Bridge collapse. International students from the Tzu Chi University of Science and Technology were also present at the event to offer company to the workers by engaging them in the language they are most comfortable with. Tzu Chi volunteers were among the first to respond to the incident by establishing service centres at nearby funeral parlours and extending care and concern to casualties admitted to the hospital. The volunteers also observed the send-off ceremonies for six deceased victims at the site of the incident and the mortuary. Hundreds of volunteers from Yilan, Taoyuan, Hualien and Taipei were mobilized to provide care to those affected by the incident, in the hopes of comforting the living and appeasing the souls of the departed.
