The World Of Tzu Chi(Vol.116)
2019 • 11 36 The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US World Trade Center struck fear in the hearts of the global community. Master Cheng Yen launched an international charity movement on October 13 that same year, a date that bears special significance as its numerical iteration, “1013” is a homophone of the phrase 一人一善 (one person, one good deed) when read in Mandarin. The initiative, now in its 18th year, has yet to lose its momentum. On October 13, 2019, Tzu Chi Penang, along with religious leaders and members of the public from all walks of life, contributed to the movement. As part of the movement, Tzu Chi Malacca organized beach clean- up activities at Pantai Klebang and Pantai Puteri, attracting 400 participants comprising members of various organizations and members of the public. The activities served to expose the participants to the growing severity of the marine waste problem, encouraging them to reflect on and make changes to their lifestyle choices to support the cause as well as rally others to do their part for the environment. The participants collected approximately 330 kg of trash throughout the two-hour activity, 114 kg of which were recyclable waste.
