2019 • 11 32 pecial Feature Coming Together for HOPE I n conjunction with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13, the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Research Centre of the National Defence University of Malaysia (Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, UPNM), non- profit organization Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCARE) and Tzu Chi jointly organized the Humanitarian Operations Experience (HOPE) Exhibition, which was held at the KL Tzu-Chi Jing Si Hall from October 12 to 14, 2019. The three-day event featured an exhibition as well as a series of talks and video screenings by various government agencies and non- governmental organizations, including the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Malaysia Civil Defence Force By Tzu Chi Documenting Team Photograph by Gan Cheah Teck (APM), Malaysian Meteorological Department, Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), Disaster Aid Malaysia and MERCY Malaysia. NADMA Operation Co-ordination Division director, Ahmad Syahrizan Said officiated the event with a strike of the gong at the opening ceremony, during which he stressed the need for government and non-governmental organizations as well as members of the public to stand united in managing disasters. Visitors to the exhibition were introduced to the approaches and strategies employed by the participating organizations in disaster
