The perils of plastic [Photograph by Koh Joo Siang] Pulling the Plug on Plastics The video footage of a team of marine biologists removing a straw lodged in a turtle’s nasal cavity highlighted the hazardous, even life-threatening, effects of plastic waste on marine life. However, the hidden dangers of seemingly harmless plastic products – disposable plastic cutlery and cups, food packaging, diapers – remain largely unnoticed. The turtle was later safely released back into the sea, but its ordeal leaves us with a timely reminder to save the environment from plastic domination before it is too late.
