TZU CHI 115 37 Local News TIMA volunteers were dispatched to the Unity and Harmony Schools in Ampang and Selayang respectively to administer vaccinations to 320 refugee students. The vaccinationexercisewas fundedby theBureau of Population, Refugees and Migration of the United States Department of State to relieve the students’ parents of the financial burden arising from vaccination costs. The students were supplied with a booster dose of the rubella vaccine to reinforce immunity against the disease. The teachers were on hand to console students who were intimidated by the needle, besides taking the opportunity to convey to the students the importance of vaccinations. Meanwhile, the volunteers briefed the parents on the role of the vaccine in reducing the risk of contracting measles among children. The Tzu-Chi Free Clinic in Pudu made its first attempt at administering an injection of botulinum toxin type A on a refugee diagnosed with cerebral stroke to relieve muscle tension in the limbs and prevent muscular dystrophy. The injection, coupled with physiotherapy, potentially enables a patient to regain control over their physical movements and lead a self-sufficient life. Botulinum toxin type A inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junctions to regulate muscle contractions and optimize muscle function. TIMA member Dr Chern Phei Ming explained that the injection restores muscle suppleness and improves the dexterity of the limbs when complemented with physiotherapy. Conversely, a lack of exercise or neglecting physiotherapy results in rigid muscles.
