The World Of Tzu Chi(Vol.113)

02 2019 • 08 University Hospital (NTUH). He readily and gracefully accepted Tzu Chi’s offer to become the first president of the university. For more than three decades, Prof Yang was actively involved in Tzu Chi’s missions of medicine and education. His wise counsel had ensured that the mission to serve could continue in the ensuing years. Thanks to Prof Yang, the medical and healthcare services provided by Tzu Chi are of good quality. Prof Yang is now a centenarian and despite his very advanced years, he has refused to retire and will continue to benefit the public with his specialized knowledge and skills in the medical field. His clear direction and values in life make him a role model for those in the medical and educational sectors. Let us learn more about Tzu Chi’s history, and appreciate those who had lent us a hand and supported our missions. Without the concerted efforts of volunteers and financial contributions from the public, the establishment of Tzu Chi schools and hospitals would not have been possible. Many like-minded professionals are actively involved in the day-to-day operations of Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital. For more than three decades, their services have benefitted numerous people; and many patients have since recovered from their illnesses. Likewise, Tzu Chi’s schools and universities have produced batches of graduates, many of whom are holding prominent positions in the administration of Tzu Chi’s missions. When I decided to build a hospital, and later a learning institute, I relied on nothing but sheer determination and will to realize my vision. I am thankful for the trust and support of everyone in enabling the completions of these buildings, which will benefit mankind. The accomplishments that we witness today are but the culmination of our past journeys. Such is history. Let us not forget our initial aspirations. With a right frame of mind and the faith in doing what is right, we can do numerous good things that will leave a long-lasting, positive impact. On the other hand, a little deviation in our thoughts can also lead us off the right track. Hence, we must always guard our minds and thoughts. In order to serve humanity, we ought to practise the Six Paramitas , namely, giving, precepts, patience, diligence, Samadhi , and wisdom. From the moment we aspired to walk the Bodhisattva Path, we must practise diligently no matter how far the journey is or how many obstacles come our way. With great compassion for all living beings, we willingly overcome all obstacles with patience and let go of our sense of attachment. Without patience and endurance, we might end up giving up on the good things we do owing to a remark from others. We must always hold on to our initial aspirations and never forget the path that we have walked together, guided by wisdom; and remember this meaningful and worthy life that we live. Seize every moment to cultivate ourselves diligently and always be heedful. aster’s Teaching * Compiled from a collection of speeches delivered by Master Cheng Yen from June 1 to June 12, 2019.
