TZU CHI 113 37 Making a vow before the Buddha A young Zhiyi fled the ravages of his fractured homeland with his family and encountered a monk, who lamented that there is no fate worse than being trapped in an endless cycle of reincarnation. The monk’s words inspired Zhiyi to surrender himself to the monastic life in wholehearted pursuit of the Dharma. Confronting inner demons Master Zhizhe ruefully observed that among his many disciples, those who were able to achieve a true understanding of the Dharma were few and far between.
