As she made her way through the space, she was drawn by the friendly atmosphere created by the heartwarming camaraderie among the volunteers. She felt the pent-up stress stemming from the demands of her job as a software engineer melt away as she immersed herself in the peace of the moment. A shoulder to lean on Chee Wan was eager to introduce her father to recycling work after experiencing first-hand its therapeutic effects, but his health deteriorated rapidly, eventually succumbing to his illness in 2016. Ah Kuan and Chee Wan fell into despair at his untimely demise and sought help from Mee Hong, who promptly took care of the funeral arrangements, assuring peace of mind for Ah Kuan’s family. The loss of a husband and father dealt a devastating blow to Ah Kuan and Chee Yan, who struggled to overcome the harrowing grief. Chee Yan was grateful to the volunteers for reaching out to prevent her and her mother from slipping further into a state of despondency. Upon learning that Ah Kuan has a penchant for gardening, volunteer Lim Siew Hwa managed to persuade Ah Kuan to take a tour of her farm in Bentong, Pahang. Meanwhile, other volunteers would divert Ah Kuan and Chee Wan’s attention from their sorrow by inviting them for meals or baking sessions. The volunteers’ constant company restored joy in Ah Kuan’s life. Ever since volunteering with Tzu Chi, Ah Kuan has gained a deeper appreciation of her current circumstances, for participating in home visits to care recipients had alerted her to the suffering of others and not to take her comfortable life for granted. On the other hand, Chee Wan had never thought herself capable of giving back to society, but volunteering with Tzu Chi has enabled her to serve others in her own way. She currently holds leadership positions in two separate Tzu Chi divisions in her community and has a kidney patient under her care. In addition, she assists Mee Hong and other Kok Ah Kuan gradually overcame her grief over her husband’s demise by dedicating her time to Tzu Chi. Wong Chee Wan (centre) is humbled by the suffering of the needy and feels grateful for the opportunity to serve others by volunteering with Tzu Chi.
